ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION

The Business Analytics Case Study assessment aims to engage students in the tools and techniques of business analytics within a business decision-making context. Students will be provided a data set (an Excel file) which will be the source of their information. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of business analytics tools, techniques, and decision-making processes.

ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTIONS

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: READ BEFORE YOU START

SUBMISSION

• The case study must be submitted via Turnitin by 11:55 pm Sunday, May 12, 2024. The submission link is available under the ‘Assessments’ folder on iLearn.

• Re-submissions are allowed until the deadline. After the deadline, no re-submissions are allowed under any circumstances.

• Note that Turnitin will compare your submission against others’ as well as internet sources including so-called ‘homework help’ websites. The originality report will be made available to you after the deadline.

DOCUMENT PREPARATION

• Prepare your answers in one document using word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word). Hand-written answers will not be marked.

o All Macquarie University students have been automatically granted a full Microsoft 365 license. Click here for more information on how to download Microsoft 365.

• Do not add a cover page to your case study or repeat the text of the questions in your submissions. Simply answer questions in order, denoting Q1, Q2, Q3… etc.

• Written answers should not exceed the maximum word limit stated in each question. Any words written exceeding the limit will not be assessed.

o Note that this is a maximum word limit, you may answer the question in fewer words if desired. Correct concise answers using a word count less than the maximum can still achieve full marks.

• The total length of your case study (including written answers, tables, screenshots, and diagrams) should be no more than 4 pages and in Calibri font size 11. Ensure your written answers are single-spaced (not double-spaced).

• Save your answer document in .docx or .pdf format.

o For Mac users: Do not submit a .pages file. Turnitin cannot read it, hence it cannot be assessed.

• After you submit you should double-check on Turnitin whether the document was properly uploaded and that all your diagrams are visible and formatted correctly. If you see any issues, you should resubmit before the deadline.

• While not explicitly marked, students will also be required to submit their Excel file. This file may be checked if issues arise.

REFERENCING

• There is no need for citation in this case study. The majority of your answers will need to draw upon concepts and frameworks from the textbook. You may use Google or other search engines to learn about your assigned industry and opportunity.

USE OF RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDING GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

For this assessment, students are permitted to use GAITs to:

• clarify concepts, theories, ideas, etc., discussed in class.

• generate preliminary ideas for writing.

• edit a working draft of the assessment.

• read and summarise research and supporting evidence for the assessment.

Students are not permitted to use GAITs to:

• generate definitions or writing used in their submission.

• produce counterarguments or refine thinking on their submission

Any of these actions will constitute a breach of academic integrity and be reported as plagiarism. If students use GAITs to generate initial ideas, they must develop and edit those ideas to a significant extent for them to be submitted as their own work.

LATE SUBMISSION

A maximum penalty of five percentage points of the total possible marks will be applied per day to late submissions, for up to a maximum of seven calendar days. Tasks that have not been submitted within the maximum number of additional late days will receive a mark of zero, unless otherwise specified in the late penalties section of the Unit Guide. Late submission for a task will only be permitted when specified in the unit guide. This provision does not apply to online exams or other assessment with a time-limit of less than 24 hours.

Where an application for Special Consideration is approved and the outcome is an extension to the due date of a task, submissions that are received after the new due date will be subject to late penalties that are calculated from the new due date. This only applies where the outcome is an extension to the due date – see the Special Consideration Policy for a schedule of all possible outcomes.

BUSINESS ANALYTICS CASE STUDY

CASE STUDY

You and a team of peers have developed a well-being app (scope and target market to be defined by you). This well-being app is to be used via customers’ personal devices such as their phones or tablets. In this regard, you have been provided with data from the World Happiness Report. Carefully go through the data set, including variable definitions. You do not need to utilise the entire data set for this assignment. Deciding what not / to use demonstrates your critical thinking.

Your short-term business plan is to launch the app in one country, expanding to that country’s region (cluster of countries) in the medium term, and going global in the long term.

As such, you need to follow these steps (Parts A – E of this assignment – 10 marks each):

A. Data Efficiency – Named Ranges, Tables, and Slicers

B. Descriptive Statistics

C. Visualisations – Conditional Formatting and Sparklines

D. Regression

E. Business Insights

PART A: Data Efficiency – Named Ranges, Tables, and Slicers

For the provided data set, create Named Ranges and convert the data set into a Table.

Add a Total Row to your Table to display Averages.

Add a Slicer for the Region.

Personalise your Table design and personalise your Slicer design.

Provide a screenshot that shows your Table and Slicer when the Regions are selected as Oceania and South East Asia, and you are displaying the results for Columns A – F.

PART B: Descriptive Statistics

For the provided data set, pick one variable from Column C to Column T, where finding a measure of centredness and a measure of spread would be useful for you in making your business decisions for this case study.

a) What variable did you pick and why? (10-50 words)

b) For the variable that you have chosen, calculate the:

i. Mean, Median, Mode

ii. Standard Deviation

c) Display these statistics in an appropriate format, including an appropriate chart that summarises the data.

d) Briefly comment on your results. (100-200 words)

PART C: Visualisations – Conditional Formatting and Sparklines

Apply the following Conditional Formatting to the 2023 values for:

 Generosity – Data Bars

 Perceptions of Corruption – Icon Sets – Traffic Lights (but lights are reversed)

 Positive Affect – Colour Scales

 Negative Affect – Colour Scales

As well as a Sparkline (Line) for log GDP per capita across the two years.

Provide a screenshot that captures all these visualisations together and shows 12-17 rows of data. You can hide non-relevant columns for the purpose of this screenshot.

For each of these 5 visualisations, what is an insight that you have gathered? You may need to sort / filter the data to generate insights. (200-300 words)

PART D: Regression

For the data set provided, between Column C and Column T, choose 2 variables to perform. a simple linear regression.

a) What variable did you choose as your explanatory (X) variable?

b) What variable did you choose as your dependent (Y) variable?

c) Why did you hypothesise that there would be such a relationship? (25-75 words)

d) Provide the appropriate scatterplot.

e) Run the regression and provide the regression output.

f) Interpret your findings including:

i. Stating the regression equation.

ii. Stating the interpretation of the slope coefficient.

iii. Judging the statistical significance of your slope coefficient.

iv. Commenting on the R-squared.

v. Commenting on the overall regression output. (50-100 words)

PART E: Business Insights for Decision Making (150-350 words)

Upon synthesising your findings from the prior questions, what business insights have you generated? You may complement your findings with further data explorations.

How has your analysis in this report / case study informed your short-term plan (in terms of the country you should launch the app in), followed by the medium-term plan (in terms of the region you would expand to) and the long-term plan for global reach?
